Anxiety is a normal reaction to certain situations and we all feel anxious from time to time. However, anxiety becomes a problem when it appears to have no cause and starts to interfere with day to day activities. There are different kinds of anxiety such as social anxiety (social phobia), generalised anxiety, health anxiety, and panic.  

 

 

What are Some of the Physical Symptoms of Anxiety? 

 

Anxiety can produce many unpleasant and sometimes frightening physical symptoms, such as:

 

  • Dry mouth

  • Shaking

  • Tension headaches

  • Tightness in the chest

  • Increased heart rate

  • Sweating

  • Hot flushes

  • Needing to use the toilet more often

  • Nausea 

  • Vomiting

  • Dizziness

  • Pins and needles in the hands and feet

  • Breathing difficulties

  • Choking sensations

 

What are Some of the Psychological Symptoms of Anxiety?

 

Anxiety affects us both physically and emotionally. Psychological symptoms include a number of unwelcome thoughts and feelings, such as:

 

  • Thinking that you may die of a heart attack or a brain tumour etc

  • Thinking you are going mad

  • Feeling that people are watching and judging you

  • Feeling that everything is speeding up or slowing down

  • Feeling extremely alert and on edge

  • Feeling that you want to run away and be alone
