What is Hypnotherapy?


Some frequently asked questions.

Hypnotherapy is a very powerful and effective form of therapy that gets to the bottom of the things that are making your life difficult or preventing you from moving forward. Using a variety of techniques, we work together to change the false and unhelpful and limiting beliefs that your mind has accepted as the truth for many years. Hypnotherapy can be used to help with weight management, fears and phobias, anxiety, self-esteem and many, many other issues.  

So, will I be unconscious while under hypnosis?

At no time will you be unconscious. In fact, you need to remain alert and focused and very much a part of the process as it is a collaborative experience whereby I guide you, but you do the work. You will hear everything I say and you are able to regain full conscious awareness at any time during the session. You will only take on the suggestions that you feel are beneficial to you and we will have discussed these before the hypnotherapy begins. You experience hypnosis several times a day, in fact, so it is nothing you haven't felt before. Think of the last time you were totally engrossed in a good book or film and you shut out the rest of the world for a short time. This state of absolute focus is very similar to hypnosis. 

What about the stage hypnotists on TV or hypnotists in films? Will you take control of my mind as they appear to do?

Absolutely not. Nobody can control your mind or your thoughts. Please disregard anything you have seen on stage or TV and don't let it put you off hypnotherapy. Rest assured that you are in control at all times, all I do is assist your own, powerful mind to make the changes you want to make. Hypnotherapy is nothing like the stage hypnotists you have seen in shows or on television but is a very useful form of therapy. There will be no clucking like a chicken or barking like a dog at the sound of a bell (unless you decide that will help to overcome your anxiety and decide on it as a goal, of course). My only job is to assist you in getting to the real root of your problem and making you feel better. You and I will discuss the process at the beginning of the session so that you know exactly what to expect and we can work together to target your particular issue. 

What Can Hypnotherapy Treat? 

Whilst I would never claim to "treat" any condition, there are a wide number of issues that can be helped with hypnotherapy. The success of the therapy is very dependant on your relationship with the therapist and the amount of effort you put in both during the session and between appointments.

How long does a session last?

Most appointments last for up to one hour. The initial session is used to get to know you and decide on some goals. In each subsequent session, usually a week apart, we will spend some time talking through the agenda for the session, you can update me on how you have been progressing since our last meeting and then the actual hypnosis lasts for around 25 to 30 minutes. That will also leave us some time for reviewing the session at the end.

How many sessions will I need?

That really depends on the issues we have to deal with and how well you respond to the hypnotherapy. Some people only require four or five sessions and will make the changes quite quickly and easily, others may need many more. Every treatment plan is designed specifically for your particular needs, there is no 'one size fits all' script or template. It is also important to recognise that hypnotherapy is not a magic bullet that will cure your problem by itself. As with most things, the more effort you put in, the more benefits you will gain and the more quickly the results will be achieved. I will give you practical homework tasks to complete between sessions and ask you to listen to a hypnosis recording or practise self-hypnosis daily. I always start with a full assessment session which will give me more idea of how long we'll need to work together.

Where Can I See You?


I see clients at Serendipity in Honiton High Street, Axminster Health and Wellbeing Centre, The @One Holistic Centre in Aylesbeare and at S&S Beauty in Exminster. If you live locally, I can come and see you at home and I can also arrange to visit you at work if you have somewhere quiet to sit for an hour. 



What if I Live Outside The Area?


If you live outside of Devon or even the UK, that is no problem at all. We can still connect and work together via Zoom. You can practise hypnotherapy from your home or workplace anywhere in the world and it is believed to be just as effective as if you and I were sitting together in the same room.
